Crisis Situation

It was always a dream of mine to visit Africa, and I was given that opportunity last January. I signed up for a 2-week trip to Uganda with the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, and I knew this trip would change my life.

Although I was excited, the plan for the trip was to attend seminars at an African university. I really wanted my visit to be more about helping people rather than attending school, but there wasn't much I could do.

I knew many African countries were suffering from poverty and a lack of materials, but how could I, as a college student, help them with their crisis? Our class decided to help Uganda by bringing an EXTRA suitcase per person full of donated items. That meant that we would each travel with just one suitcase with our own clothes in and a second suitcase of items for the people of Uganda.

We didn't have much time, but we were able to collect TONS of donations! The process of asking friends and family members to donate and then packing the items was easy. We had suitcases full of baby clothes, medical supplies, books, and more! We delivered these items to schools, hospitals, and orphanages all around Uganda.

I am very happy with our solution to the crisis that some Ugandans are suffering through. However, I wish we would have been able to bring more items so that more people could be relieved of the crisis situation that goes along with poverty.
